Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Village CMSWhat is Village CMS?

Village CMS is a content management system that helps you create and edit your own website. You don't need to install anything because everything happens right in your web browser. Your website is hosted for you and you pay monthly for the service. When Village CMS gets an update, you get the update too.

There are two ways to use Village CMS: with our free service, you’ll get an address like http://mywebsite.VillageCMS.com. With our pay service, you’ll be able to use your own domain name.

  2. Can I use it for free?

Yes! Sign up for Village CMS, and use it for free. Free accounts are restricted to only one user, and to a villagecms.com domain name. See our Terms of Service page for a full explanation of restrictions.
  3. How much does Village CMS cost?

Plans are $12, $24 or $45 per month.
  4. Can I use my own domain name?

Absolutely. Most domain name registrars will allow you to point your domain name at our server. There are instructions on how to do this once you are ready to do so. If you need some help, we would be happy to assist you.
  5. Which browsers do you support?

Any website created with Village CMS can output designs that work well in any browser. The extent of which browsers/platforms you support depends on how well you (or your web designer) sets up the CSS/HTML. The default template we provide is tested in the major browsers.

The admin and edit features of Village CMS have restrictions on which browsers you can use. We recommend Firefox 3 (Mac or PC). It's free and works great.

  6. Do you offer e-mail hosting?

Village CMS does not include email hosting at this time. You can work with any reputable hosting provider, or you can contact Northern Village for some assistance in finding one.
  7. I know how to use photoshop but I'm not a programmer. How do I get my design set up in Village CMS?

There are many programmers out there who can turn your Photoshop into valid XHTML and CSS. If you have a techy that you have been working with, Northern Village would be happy to help them create your site. Or we would be happy to help you ourselves. For our full range of services, take a look at NorthernVillage.com.
  8. I am a programmer, and like the idea of Village CMS. Where can I find more information on the backend code?

Once you are in the design section of the site, you can have access to the API. Also, if you need some assistance, contact us at Northern Village and we would be happy to help out.
  9. I am concerned about my website. Is my website safe with Village CMS?

  10. VillageCMS takes daily backups of all its websites. In the unlikely event of having the data lost due to the system going down, or hardware failure, or similar malady, the data will be restored free of charge. Currently there is not a service to restore data that is a result of client error, including not keeping their passwords safe or having them set to something that is easily-guessable. The websites that are created can be exported as HTML, so you can keep your own copy of the site as well. Also, the themes that create the look and feel of the site can also be exported.
  11. Can I install Village CMS on my own server?

No, Village CMS is only available as a hosted service.
  12. What happens if I need more storage space?

You can upgrade your account at any time. We can also help you if you need more than the biggest plan currently offers.
  13. Which currency do you bill in?

We currently bill in Canadian Dollars.
  14. What name should I look for on my credit card statement?

    "Northern Village Inc."
  15. Are there any long-term contracts or sign-up fees?
